THE YEAR'S BEST CHRISTIAN BOOKS OF 2009
The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association is pleased to announce the
Christian Book Award Winners for 2009, honoring the year’s finest in Christian publishing. Since 1978 the Christian Book Awards (formerly the Gold Medallion Awards) have awarded excellence in six categories: Bibles, Bible Reference & Study, Children & Youth, Inspiration & Gift, Christian Life, and Fiction.
Five finalists are selected in each category following a stringent judging process by judging panels specially selected for each category. Each title is evaluated and scored based on category-specific criteria such as content, literary quality, design and impact. The top scoring book in each category is named the
Christian Book Award Winner. The Christian Book of the Year is chosen among the finalists based on its overall impact on the consumer as measured by sales.
The
Christian Book Award Winners and
Christian Book of the Year were announced at the Christian Book Expo held in Dallas on March 19.

"When the Bible says that “he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45), it cannot mean just a few scattered predictions about the Messiah. It means the OT as a whole, encompassing all three of the major division of the OT that the Jews traditionally recognized."

"Our understanding of the book of Psalms probably has suffered as a result of its frequent characterization as the 'hymnbook of the Old Testament.' ...One thing is certain: the Psalter at some point became a canonical book of the OT. It became a book to be read and meditated upon and applied, just like any other book of the OT—not a hymnbook, but a book.

"At the all-important pivot of human history, the worst sin ever committed served to show the greatest glory of Christ and obtain the sin-conquering gift of God’s grace. God did not just overcome evil at the cross. He made evil serve the overcoming of evil. He made evil commit suicide in doing its worst evil.

"Girls nearly always rank other qualities as more important than outward looks—and they mean it! … The truth about how girls see guys goes against so many male assumptions. That’s why most of us need to change how we think about girls. Otherwise we’ll be clueless when it comes to girls. And clueless doesn’t look good on a man.

"When I awoke, I was here. I felt the iron chain on my ankles first, then the brackish taste of blood in my mouth, then the chill of a stone floor. Mary Easty is here. Martha Corey is here, in another room. There are others. They have all been charged with witchcraft. And so have I.
